Ask any Irish stalker when to come for Sika in Wicklow and you'll get the same answer: October. The rut is the most atmospheric hunt in Ireland — whistling stags, cold misted mornings, and mature animals making predictable mistakes. But October isn't the only option, and for certain goals a shoulder-season trip makes more sense.
Month-by-Month in Wicklow
August — Early Stag Season
Stag season opens 1 August. Velvet is being stripped and the biggest stags are still relatively relaxed and in feeding routines. Weather tends to be warm and the midges are at their peak in the forestry blocks. Good month for a management cull outing or younger stag at lower prices, quiet pressure.
September — Pre-Rut
Pre-rut kicks off in mid September. Stags start scenting, wallowing and moving more in daylight. Hinds not yet huddled in rutting groups. Early-to-mid September is a solid window for locals who want a trophy without the October premium.
Late September – Mid October — PEAK RUT
This is the window. Mature stags are calling aggressively, working rutting stands, and — critically — moving in daylight. Outfitters charge their highest rates for this two- to three-week slot and book out 6–12 months in advance for prime dates. If you want the classic Wicklow Sika experience, this is when you come.
Late October – November — Tail of the Rut
Rutting activity tails off but stags remain more visible than in summer. Weather starts to turn and leaf fall improves visibility in forestry. Prices usually drop 15–25% versus peak dates. Good value if you're content with a smaller stag or a second-chance trip.
December – January — Hind Season
Hind season runs 1 November to 31 March. December and January are the classic months for management / cull hunting. Much cheaper, wet, sometimes snow on the higher ground. Excellent for hunters who want a productive, practical stalk rather than a trophy head.
February – April — Late Season
Stag season continues (Sika stag is open until 30 April). Hinds close on 31 March. Weather is tough but stag movement increases in late March and April as they recover condition. Quiet ground, low prices, and a chance to hunt without the crowds. Not the one for first-timers.
Weather Reality Check
Wicklow weather is temperate and wet. You'll get rain on most days in October — typically light drizzle rather than downpours, though storms do roll in. Morning fog in the glens is normal. Temperatures sit between 5–15 °C in peak rut. Wind is the real variable: calm days in Wicklow are rare, and a strong westerly makes calling work harder.
None of this should stop you. Irish hunting culture assumes you're in waterproofs from dawn.
What "Best" Actually Means For You
If your goal is trophy: early-to-mid October, first and second week.
If your goal is atmosphere and a story: any time in October — the rut works either way.
If your goal is value: late October, November, or December hind stalks.
If your goal is a productive day out in off-season: August or March.
