Start with the legal route, not a package

A hunting trip combines several separate questions: whether the species and place are open under the current NPWS order, whether a deer licence is required, whether the visitor has the correct firearms authority, whether the operator has lawful access to the proposed ground, and whether the advertised service is actually available. An operator can help explain its process, but only the relevant authority can determine a licence or certificate application.

For 2026/27, NPWS says deer-licence applications are made through the Heritage Licensing Portal. It also distinguishes out-of-state applications connected with a commercial tour operator from those that are not. An Garda Síochána separately says a person not ordinarily resident in Ireland may apply for a Non-Resident Firearm Certificate. Begin these checks before choosing flights or paying a deposit.

What the 2026/27 NPWS deer page currently says

NPWS states that deer licences are annual and cover 1 August to 31 July. Applicants upload a firearm certificate, with a proof-of-purchase route described for first-time applicants who have not yet received one. First-time deer-licence applicants must provide evidence of approved training or equivalent evidence from their country of residence. Out-of-state applicants who are not connected with a commercial tour operator must provide landowner-permission details.

Those points explain why “the guide handles everything” is not a safe assumption. Ask the operator which application route it expects you to use, then verify that route with the NPWS Wildlife Licensing Unit. Do the same separately for firearms with An Garda Síochána. Leave enough time for questions or returned documentation; an operator's available date does not accelerate an authority's decision.

Before paying a trip deposit

• Check the contracting name and obtain a dated invoice or written quote.
• Confirm the exact species, ground, dates and proposed activity.
• Ask for written inclusions, exclusions and cancellation/refund terms.
• Confirm land authority and insurance rather than relying on marketing copy.
• Resolve the deer-licence and firearm-certificate routes with the competent bodies.
• Book travel only after the operator confirms the meeting point and the relevant paperwork is in order.
